Human rights

the idea of human rights from our point of view comes from the 18th Century. It began during the French Revolution, it brought about

the first important human rights document - The Declaration of Human Rights of 1789. But the real origins are much older. There were

a lot of philosophers, who devoted their works to human rights. All along the aims of philosophers, political and scientists to preserve

freedom and the rights of people in different places of the world. However, there used to be different statuses within societies and the

universal rights were not guaranteed to all people. The idea of universal human rights came in the 18th Century and it has slowly

developed up to now. In my opinion, however, it is important to seek ways to promote the further development of human rights.

Globalization in the field of human rights should help to bring about freedom and peace throughout the world. It's not a simple concept,

but I believe in people and their education. People have already made many mistakes and we should try to improve our standard of

living by avoiding wars and violence. One of the most promising instruments is the European Union and its enlargement and other

forms of world - wide political and economic unity.

On a community level, we must teach our children how to love others. Morals and a sense of personal responsibility must be the main

focus of our conduct. Our generation should try to create a society under the Rule of law, which is both a social and democratic state.

There used to be a lot of countries in Europe, where human rights did not prevail for a very long period of time, such as Romania.

Also, Czechoslovakia, the country I was born in, was not prepared to enforce its own human rights policies. We had one document

from the 1976 - the Act of Parliament number 120 / 1976 Digest about human rights. From the year 1977 to 1990 existed the Charter

77, a form of petition calling on the government of Czechoslovakia to enforce the human rights set out in the Act of Parliament. The

action was also meant as a method of checking on breaches of the Act. The very large repression against the people, who signed

Charter 77 (among them Václav Havel), was evidence that human rights laws in Czechoslovakia were not enforced.

A system of government, which looks only at group rights and does not support individual human rights and responsibilities is not

possible in a modern society. This has been shown through the former political system of my own country, Czechoslovakia. The whole

time we had enough actors, authors and students who risked their lives for freedom of speech for example by putting their name to

Charter 77 and secret broadcasting of the radio station Free Europe, among others.

All these activities planted the idea of independence, freedom, equality and equity.

And therefore I think that the most important areas where education can help are:

1. Morals

2. Interpersonal Relationships

3. Information

1. Morals

How to educate our children is an important question every society faces. It must start from the very beginning. As far as I know, there

are at least two very different models.

On the one hand, there is the very liberal system in America, Britain and Germany, which I am familiar with through friends and my

own experiences abroad.

On the other hand in the east part of Europe there is very strict system of education, with which I grew up. You must learn and study

very hard. The system I am used to does not give enough praise to young people. I have grown up in a society where people do not

openly express their opinions, feeling and criticisms. However, I also feel that the western system could learn from the system I am

used to.

A mixture of the two, whereby young people are brought up in a strong, close-knit family but are encouraged to express themselves

openly is the best way for young people to become citizens with a feeling of personal responsibility and pride.

2. Interpersonal relationships

Under this concept we can imagine the conduct such a helping our neighbors, being polite to your friends, colleagues and parents.

We should see the right picture of the society in our families. Our parents should be our best example. Children must have some

model to help them to grow into the responsible citizens of the future. They also should have a lot of social activities, so they develop

good social skills and learn how to interact with other people. It is also important that children do not spend a lot of time unsupervised,

so that there is always someone from whom the child can learn good morals.

3. Information

The most important thing is to ensure the availability of information, a great amount of material about our histories, geographical

situation, neighbors and customs. It helps us to avoid the mistakes, which we have made in the past. And I think there were too many

mistakes in this so called ”civilization” in the past and although we will make mistakes in the future, by informing ourselves about the

world we can try to be more open and progressive.

We ought to try to be better. We must save our Earth, our environment and work together to make our lives better.
